spotting

Catching a glimpse

Spotting covers various kinds of seeing or marking with spots.

To spot something is to notice it: I spotted her across the room.

A spotter is someone who watches—a talent scout, a gym partner monitoring a weightlifter, or a military observer locating targets.

Spotting also means light, irregular bleeding between menstrual periods.

In gymnastics and weightlifting, spotting is standing ready to catch or assist someone during a risky move.

The participial form of spot in its staining sense gives us a spotting of blood on the carpet.
