omen

Harbinger of fate

An omen is a sign or event believed to foretell the future, especially something momentous or fateful: The crow at the window seemed like an omen.

Omens can be good or bad, though the word alone often suggests something ominous—a dark portent.

To omen is rare; the adjective forms ominous and the verb portend are more common.
