syrinx
Avian vocal organ
A syrinx is the vocal organ of birds, located where the trachea splits into the bronchi—distinct from the mammalian larynx and capable of producing complex songs.
In anatomy, syrinx also names a pathological fluid-filled cavity in the spinal cord.
The word appears in classical contexts for the panpipe, named for the nymph Syrinx who was transformed into reeds.
