Stairs' resting platform
A landing is the act of coming down to rest on a surface—an airplane's landing, a gymnast sticking a landing.
It also names the place where this happens: a boat landing on a river, a landing strip for aircraft.
Inside buildings, a landing is the platform between flights of stairs where you can pause or change direction.
As a modifier, it describes things used for coming ashore: landing craft, landing party.
