identification

Establishing who's who

Identification is the act of recognizing or establishing what something is or who someone is: The witness made a positive identification.

It also refers to documents that prove identity—a driver's license, passport, or ID card: The bouncer asked for identification.

In psychology, identification describes the process of associating oneself emotionally with another person or group: her identification with the character's struggles.

To feel identification with something is to see yourself in it.
