lifer
Never getting out
A lifer is someone committed to something for life.
In prison slang, a lifer serves a life sentence: The lifers kept to themselves in the yard.
More broadly, it describes someone devoted to a career or institution for the long haul: a military lifer, a lifer at the company.
The term can carry admiration for dedication or mild derision for lack of ambition.
