gizzard
Avian grinding organ
A gizzard is the muscular second stomach found in birds, where food is ground up after leaving the crop.
Because birds lack teeth, the gizzard does the work of mechanical digestion, often aided by small stones the bird has swallowed.
Chicken gizzards are edible and commonly served fried or stewed.
Informally, gizzard can refer to a person's gut or innards: That joke busted my gizzard.
