perch

Pole for parakeets

A perch is a place where a bird rests, typically a branch or rod, and by extension any elevated seat or vantage point where someone sits or stands: She watched the parade from her perch on the balcony.

To perch is to sit or rest in such a position, often suggesting something precarious or temporary.

Perch is also a common freshwater fish with spiny fins, popular among anglers.

In older usage, a perch was a unit of measurement equal to about five and a half yards.
