sun
Our nearest star
The sun is the star at the center of our solar system, source of Earth's light and heat.
By extension, any star with orbiting planets is a sun.
Sunlight, sunshine, and sunny all derive from this central meaning.
To sun oneself is to bask in sunlight: She sunned herself on the deck.
To be under the sun is to exist at all: the greatest thing under the sun. (Capitalized Sun is also used, especially in astronomical contexts.)
