ascend
Rise toward sky
To ascend is to move upward—climbing stairs, rising through air, or scaling a mountain.
The word carries formality that *go up* lacks: The balloon ascended into the clouds.
Figuratively, one ascends to higher status or power: She ascended to the throne, He ascended the corporate ladder.
In music, notes ascend when they move from lower to higher pitch.
