dog

Fetch-playing companion

Dog is a native English word that denotes the domesticated form of canine that is descended from the gray wolf.

Dog combines with many other words to form compounds such as bulldog and sheepdog.

It is also frequently modified by adjectives, since there are so many kinds of dogs and they serve so many different purposes: police dog, attack dog, and stray dog.

As a slang word, dog can mean feet (my dogs are tired) or it can designate a person, as in You lucky dog!
