native

Belonging by birth

Native describes something belonging to a place by origin rather than arrival.

A native plant or native speaker originated where it's found.

People native to a region were born there: She's a native of Texas.

Native can also mean innate: native intelligence.

When applied to indigenous peoples, the word requires care—it can sound colonial or dismissive depending on context.

Going native means adopting local customs, often with condescending overtones. (Capitalized Native often refers specifically to Indigenous peoples.)
