incubate
Sit and wait
To incubate is to keep eggs warm until they hatch, as birds do by sitting on nests.
The term extends to bacteria or viruses developing in a host before symptoms appear: The disease incubates for two weeks.
Figuratively, to incubate an idea is to develop it slowly before revealing it: She incubated the business plan for months.
An incubator maintains controlled conditions for premature infants or developing embryos.
