wings
Fliers use them
Wings are paired appendages that enable flight in birds, insects, and bats—or the analogous structures on aircraft.
The word extends to things that flank a central body: the wings of a building, the wings of a stage (offstage areas), or the wing of a political party (its left or right faction).
In sports, a wing is a player positioned near the sideline.
Chicken wings, often just called wings, are a popular food item, typically fried and sauced.
To wing it is to improvise without preparation: I hadn't studied, so I just winged it.
To take someone under your wing is to mentor or protect them.
