water
Universal solvent, basically
Water is the liquid that is a main constituent of earth and of living things.
Most of the verbs that precede water have to do with human uses of it: boil, drink, pour, supply.
Many of the verbs that follow water have to do with things it does naturally: flow, drain, evaporate, flood.
Water is usually uncountable but as a count noun it can designate a serving of it (two waters, please), and in the plural it denotes, somewhat poetically, the water of a particular body: the waters of the Nile.
The verb water usually means to supply the substance: Have you watered the tomatoes yet?
Water metaphors often have to do with its destructive capacity: underwater means “in debt” and in hot water means being in trouble.
