sacrum

Fused spinal base

The sacrum is a triangular bone at the base of the spine, formed from five fused vertebrae.

It connects the spine to the pelvis, wedged between the hip bones.

The word comes from Latin for "sacred bone"—ancient peoples believed the sacrum housed the soul or would be first to resurrect.
