axis of evil
Threatening nation bloc
Axis of evil is a phrase coined by President George W.
Bush in his 2002 State of the Union address, grouping Iraq, Iran, and North Korea as nations pursuing weapons of mass destruction and sponsoring terrorism.
The phrase echoed World War II's Axis powers, framing these countries as a unified threat requiring confrontation.
It became shorthand for American foreign policy doctrine in the early 2000s and is now used more loosely for any grouping of perceived adversaries: Critics dubbed the tech monopolies an axis of evil.
