stroke
Butterfly, for one
The core idea of stroke is verbal, and is related to strike but usually has more gentle connotations (except in the case of the cerebral blockage or hemorrhage that we call a stroke).
To stroke an object or animal is to caress it with the hand, often in a caring and repetitive way.
Stroke is sometimes used figuratively to mean flatter: He stroked her ego.
A stroke is also an act or instance of stroking, typically when it denotes a repetitive movement: Children learn all the major strokes in swimming. You can see individual brush strokes in the photograph.
