coordinate plane

Axes crossing perpendicularly

A coordinate plane is a flat surface defined by two perpendicular number lines—typically horizontal (x-axis) and vertical (y-axis)—that intersect at a point called the origin.

Any point on the plane can be located by a pair of numbers indicating its distance from each axis: Plot the point (3, 5) on the coordinate plane.

Also called the Cartesian plane, after mathematician René Descartes.
