maxilla
Mandible's upper counterpart
The maxilla is the upper jawbone in vertebrates, forming the upper jaw and much of the mid-face.
In humans, the paired maxillae fuse to support the upper teeth, form the floor of the eye sockets, and shape the nose and palate.
In insects and other arthropods, maxillae are paired mouthparts used for manipulating food.
Plural: maxillae or maxillas.
