Allied Powers
Anti-Axis nations
The formal name for the coalition of nations that opposed the Central Powers in World War I and the Axis powers in World War II.
In the first war, the Allied Powers included France, Britain, Russia, Italy, and the United States.
In the second, the principal Allied Powers were the United States, Britain, the Soviet Union, and China, though dozens of nations joined the alliance.
The term carries historical weight and appears in treaties, histories, and formal contexts: The Allied Powers accepted Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945. (Lowercase allied powers describes any wartime coalition.)
