weight

What scales measure

When you weigh something, you determine its weight: The weight of the package is seven pounds.

A person’s weight is how much they weigh: Haven’t you put on some weight?

Just as weigh can mean consider, weight can also mean importance: Our argument carried weight with the senators.

Units of heaviness or mass are called weights: weights and measures.

In a gym, weights are the heavy objects people use in for body-building or weight training.

The comparatively infrequent verb weight usually means to bias something in a particular way: Boston teachers’ salaries are weighted for the higher cost of living there.
