duty

What's morally required

Duty is an obligation—something you must do because of your role, position, or moral code.

A soldier has duties, as does a nurse, a citizen, or a child.

Jury duty is compulsory service.

To be on duty is to be working; off duty means free from responsibilities.

Duty also refers to a tax on imports: customs duty, duty-free.

The phrase do one's duty can mean anything from fulfilling basic responsibilities to a euphemism for using the toilet.
