strain

Overworked tendon injury

Strain has two sets of meanings.

The noun strain refers to an identifiable group of plants, animals, or characteristics: The infection involved a resistant strain of bacteria.

A strain of discontent (for example) is a noticeable recurrence of it in a situation or group.

In the second meaning, the noun and verb strain refers to an injury brought about by stress (muscle strain).

If you strain a body part, you injure it by overuse or working it too hard.

To strain to do something is to put forth great effort.
