tare

Packaging weight allowance

Tare has two distinct origins.

One tare is a weed mentioned in biblical parables, often identified with darnel—a grass that resembles wheat but yields no grain.

The other tare is the weight of a container, deducted when weighing goods to determine net weight: The scale accounts for tare automatically.

To tare a scale is to zero it out with the container in place.
