mooring

Where vessels rest

A mooring is a place where a boat or ship is secured, or the equipment used to secure it—ropes, chains, anchors, or fixed posts.

The plural moorings often refers to the entire arrangement: The storm tore the yacht from its moorings.

Figuratively, moorings are sources of stability or connection: She felt cut loose from her moorings after the divorce.
