impact
Striking together violently
Impact is a noun and a verb with closely related meanings.
Until the late 20th century, the verb impact was not frequent, but today it is used interchangeably with affect: How will the weather impact your travel plans?
A less frequent verb use, seen more often in adjectival use, is to pack or wedge firmly: I have an impacted wisdom tooth.
The noun has a slightly stronger meaning than effect: University officials were surprised that the firing had such an impact on students’ morale.
