sample

Portion for testing

A sample is a small portion taken from something larger—enough to show what the whole is like.

You might taste a sample of cheese, analyze a blood sample, or survey a sample of voters.

In music, to sample is to extract a snippet from an existing recording for use in a new track.

As an adjective, sample indicates something representative: a sample size of 500, sample questions from the exam.
