deadlift

Hip hinge exercise

A deadlift is a weightlifting exercise in which you lift a loaded barbell from the floor to hip level, then lower it back down.

The name reflects that you're lifting "dead" weight—there's no momentum from a preceding movement.

It's one of the three lifts in competitive powerlifting, alongside the squat and bench press.

She deadlifted 300 pounds for a new personal record.
