sea

Smaller than ocean

A sea is a large body of saltwater—either the ocean generally or a specific portion of it: the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea.

By extension, sea describes vast quantities: a sea of faces, a sea of troubles.

To be at sea is to be on a voyage, or figuratively, confused and uncertain.

Out to sea means away from shore.

Sea modifies countless compounds: seafood, seabed, seaside, seaworthy.
