siren
Blaring warning sound
A siren is a device that produces a loud, wailing warning sound—on emergency vehicles, at factories, or for air raids.
The sound itself is also called a siren: The ambulance siren grew closer.
From Greek mythology, a siren is a creature whose beautiful singing lured sailors to shipwreck, so the word extends to any dangerously alluring woman: She was a siren who left a trail of broken hearts.
The adjective siren describes something seductively appealing but potentially harmful: the siren call of easy money. (Capitalized Siren refers specifically to the mythological creatures.)
