surf

Ride the waves

Surf refers to the waves breaking on a shore, or the foam and spray they produce.

To surf is to ride those waves on a board, a sport that requires balance, timing, and a good read of the water.

The word extends naturally to other kinds of gliding motion: you surf the Internet by moving through websites, or surf TV channels by flipping through them.

We spent the morning surfing before the wind died down.

Someone who surfs is a surfer.
