whitecap

Wave's frothy top

A whitecap is a wave with a foamy white crest, formed when wind whips the top of a wave into spray.

Whitecaps indicate choppy conditions on lakes, seas, or oceans: The bay was covered in whitecaps as the storm approached.

The white foam contrasts with the darker water beneath.
