Scylla

Strait-dwelling sea monster

Scylla is a six-headed sea monster from Greek mythology who lived in a cave on one side of a narrow strait, opposite the whirlpool Charybdis.

Ships passing through had to choose which danger to face, giving rise to the expression between Scylla and Charybdis, meaning caught between two equally perilous alternatives with no safe option.

The phrase functions like "between a rock and a hard place."
