lake

Landlocked freshwater body

A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land, bigger than a pond and usually freshwater: We spent summers at the lake.

The word extends to similar accumulations of other liquids: a lake of molten lava, a lake of spilled wine.

Lake also names a type of pigment made by combining dye with a metalite base, producing rich colors for paints and inks. (Capitalized Lake appears in proper names of specific bodies of water.)
