pool

Still water body

Pool has two distinct origins in English.

One pool is a body of still water—a pond, a puddle, or an artificial basin for swimming: The kids splashed in the pool.

Blood or other liquids collect in pools.

The other pool is a shared resource or collective stake.

A typing pool shares secretarial work; a car pool shares rides; a gene pool contains a population's genetic material.

To pool resources is to combine them.

Pool is also a billiards game played on a table with pockets, named for the betting pools once associated with it.
