earth

What worms inhabit

Earth is the name for the planet we inhabit; this is nearly always the meaning if the word is capitalized.

Earth can also mean land (in contrast to air or sea) or soil: I planted seeds in the loamy earth.

Some fixed expressions using earth are not to be taken literally, like cost the earth (cost a lot) or I felt the earth move (I was deeply impressed).

In British English, earth (noun and verb) has the same meaning as ground in American English as it applies to electrical connections.
