roof

Building's top cover

A roof is the top covering of a building or vehicle, the structure that shelters what's beneath from weather.

By extension, roof means any overhead covering or upper limit: the roof of the mouth, a roof of branches.

To raise the roof is to make a great commotion.

To hit the roof is to become suddenly furious.

A roof over your head means basic shelter.
