eaves

Icicle formation sites

Eaves are the edges of a roof that overhang the walls of a building, projecting outward to direct rainwater away from the structure.

The word is almost always plural, even when referring to a single roof edge.

To eavesdrop originally meant to stand within the eavesdrop—the strip of ground where water drips from the eaves—close enough to a building to secretly listen to conversations inside.
