slate

Gray layered rock

Slate is a fine-grained rock that splits into smooth, flat layers, traditionally used for roofing tiles and chalkboards.

The color slate is a dark bluish-gray.

A slate is also a list of candidates or items grouped together: The party announced its slate for the upcoming election.

To slate something is to schedule it: The meeting is slated for Tuesday.

In British usage, to slate someone is to criticize them harshly: Critics slated the film.

To wipe the slate clean is to start fresh, forgetting past offenses—from the practice of erasing chalk marks. (Capitalized Slate is a news magazine.)
