joist

Horizontal ceiling support

A joist is a horizontal beam that supports a floor or ceiling.

Joists run parallel to each other, typically spanning from wall to wall or resting on larger beams, forming the structural framework beneath floorboards or above ceiling panels: The old joists creaked underfoot.

We had to sister the damaged joist to reinforce it.
