gambrel

Double-sloped barn roof

A gambrel is a type of roof with two slopes on each side—a steeper lower slope and a shallower upper slope, creating more usable space beneath.

The design is characteristic of barns and colonial American houses: a gambrel-roofed Dutch colonial, the old gambrel barn.

Separately, a gambrel is a wooden frame or metal hook used by butchers to hang animal carcasses by the hind legs.
