Fireplace's vertical exhaust
A chimney is a vertical structure that channels smoke and gases from a fire or furnace up and out of a building.
By extension, chimney applies to any similar passage—a volcanic chimney, a glass chimney around a lamp flame, or a narrow vertical cleft in rock that climbers ascend by bracing against opposite walls.
