shingles

Overlapping roof pieces

Shingles is a painful viral infection causing a blistering rash, typically appearing as a band or strip on one side of the body.

It's caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which lies dormant in nerve tissue and can emerge decades later, usually in older adults or those with weakened immune systems: My father developed shingles at seventy.

The name comes from a Latin word meaning belt or girdle, describing how the rash wraps around the torso.
