bank barn
Two-level farm building
A bank barn is a barn built into a hillside, allowing ground-level access on two different floors.
Farmers drive wagons directly into the upper level for hay storage while livestock occupy the lower level, which stays naturally cool in summer and warm in winter.
Common in Pennsylvania and other hilly regions of the northeastern United States.
