bottom

Where things settle

In most of its meanings, bottom is the opposite of top and refers to a lower or lowest part of something.

In figurative use, the bottom of something is the cause or explanation for it: The detective vowed to get to the bottom of the murder.

Bottom is also, figuratively, the worst point or phase of something before an improvement begins: He had to hit rock bottom before seeking treatment for his addiction.

Informally, your bottom is your buttock.

In baseball, the bottom of an inning is the second half.

If something bottoms out, it reaches its lowest point.
