floor

Carpeted walking surface

The basic and original meaning of floor is still the most prevalent: the lower, flat, horizontal surface of a room.

Words that precede floor usually tell us something about its composition (marble floor, bamboo floor), its level in a multistory building (second floor, ninth floor), or its function (trading floor, dance floor).

Figurative uses of floor usually draw on its quality of being at the bottom of something (ocean floor), or the lower limit of something, such as a price or bid.

Someone who has the floor has the right to address a meeting or assembly.

If you floor someone, you confound or surprise them. #
