sheathing

Outer wall layer

Sheathing is protective material that covers an underlying structure.

In construction, sheathing is the layer of boards or panels attached to a building's frame before siding or roofing goes on: The carpenters nailed plywood sheathing to the exterior walls.

The term applies to any protective casing—the sheathing around electrical cables, the copper sheathing on a ship's hull.
