mansard

French attic style

A mansard is a roof with two slopes on each side, the lower slope steeper than the upper.

The design allows more usable space in the attic, effectively creating an extra floor.

Common in French architecture and Victorian buildings: The old hotel had a distinctive mansard roof with dormer windows.
