underlayment

Beneath the flooring

Underlayment is a layer of material placed beneath a finished surface, typically flooring.

It sits between the subfloor and the visible floor covering—hardwood, laminate, tile, or carpet—providing cushioning, moisture protection, sound dampening, or a smoother base: We installed foam underlayment before laying the laminate.

Roofing underlayment serves a similar function beneath shingles.
